Acupuncture & Dry Needling in Woodbury, MN

Safe, Natural Healing for Those of All Ages and Stages

Serving Woodbury, St. Paul, Oakdale, Cottage Grove, Maplewood, Inver Grove Heights, West St. Paul, Lake Elmo, and Stillwater

When you are in significant pain, you need more than temporary relief. You need a treatment that directly targets the source of the problem and helps your body reset. Our Woodbury chiropractors provide acupuncture and dry needling for patients experiencing everything from persistent daily discomfort to severe muscle tension, chronic conditions, and sports-related injuries that are limiting movement and quality of life.

Both acupuncture and dry needling are safe, highly precise techniques designed to calm irritated nerves, release deep muscular tension, and restore proper communication within the body. Using ultra-fine, sterile needles, often combined with electrostimulation, we stimulate specific points and trigger areas to activate your body’s natural healing response. This increases circulation, reduces inflammation, improves mobility, and helps interrupt pain cycles that have not responded to other treatments.

For patients dealing with intense neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatica, trigger points, or muscle spasms, these therapies can provide meaningful relief when it feels like nothing else has worked. Treatments are typically well tolerated and often described as relieving rather than painful.

Acupuncture and dry needling are powerful components of modern pain management. They combine time-tested therapeutic principles with today’s anatomical and neurological understanding, giving patients a comprehensive, evidence-informed option for reducing pain, improving function, and regaining control of their health.

We proudly accept Medicaid and Medical Assistance for patients 20 and under. If you have questions about your plan or are interested in learning more about how acupuncture and dry needling can benefit your life, please contact our Woodbury acupuncture clinic or schedule an appointment today.

What’s the Difference Between Acupuncture & Dry Needling?

Acupuncture and dry needling share many similarities, notably the use of very thin needles to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction. In our clinic, both treatments may be combined with electrical stimulation (E-stim), which adds a mild electrical current to the needles to induce muscle contraction and relaxation.

However, the two techniques differ slightly.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Our acupuncture approach focuses on stimulating the nervous system to relieve pain and improve mobility by placing thin needles at precise points that activate the body’s pain pathways, boost circulation, and promote healing.

We use two types of acupuncture: electroacupuncture and battlefield acupuncture.

What is Electroacupuncture (EA)?

EA is a variation of acupuncture that applies a small electric current to acupuncture needles once they are in place. This reduces inflammation and alleviates pain. It’s commonly used for chronic pain, neuromuscular issues, and sometimes to enhance the effect of traditional acupuncture, with sessions often lasting 10–20 minutes.

What is Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA)?

BFA is a specific, standardized protocol using auricular (ear) therapy to provide rapid relief for acute pain. Small needles are inserted into points on the ear in a specific order; they remain in place for two to four days and provide ongoing painrelief.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

In contrast, dry needling targets tight muscles or trigger points directly, effectively releasing muscle tension, enhancing range of motion, and alleviating pain.

Both methods restore function by modulating pain signals, reducing inflammation, and increasing blood flow to tight or injured areas, thereby accelerating recovery and improving outcomes.

Are Acupuncture & Dry Needling Safe? Yes!

When performed by trained professionals, acupuncture and dry needling are extremely safe, precise, and minimally invasive treatments designed with patient comfort as a top priority.

Both techniques use ultra-fine, sterile, single-use needles that are significantly thinner than those used for injections or blood draws. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during treatment. In fact, many report a sense of relief, relaxation, or reduced pressure as tight muscles release and irritated nerves begin to calm.

For centuries, acupuncture has been used to restore balance and promote whole-body wellness. Dry needling, grounded in modern anatomical and neurological science, targets specific muscular trigger points to reduce tension and improve function.

Today, these therapies are widely integrated into evidence-based care plans and often provide results comparable to conventional medical treatments, without the risks of medication dependence, harsh side effects, or extended recovery time.

More than 14 million Americans seek acupuncture each year, and both acupuncture and dry needling are commonly used in sports medicine settings to help athletes recover faster, prevent injury, and enhance performance. However, their benefits extend well beyond athletics.

Patients from all backgrounds turn to these therapies as safe, natural options for managing acute and chronic pain, reducing stress, improving sleep, enhancing mental clarity, and restoring mobility. When you are dealing with persistent discomfort or significant pain, acupuncture and dry needling offer a well-established, research-supported path toward healing and long-term relief.

The primary goals of dry needling and acupuncture are to:

  • Restore optimal muscle function
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve overall mobility and integrity of movement
  • Improve physical and mental well-being

What are the Benefits of Acupuncture & Dry Needling?

Acupuncture and dry needling therapy offer a thoughtful, conservative approach that leverages your body’s innate healing abilities. They restore equilibrium as your system naturally resolves dysfunction. But their impact reaches far beyond basic symptom relief.

Common benefits of dry needling and acupuncture include:

What to Expect During Treatment

Before the Session

The chiropractor or trained practitioner will review your health history, discuss your areas of pain or tension, and identify target muscles or trigger points. They’ll explain the procedure and answer any questions.

Getting Set Up

You’ll be positioned on our treatment table, lying face down, face up, or on your side, depending on the target area. The skin is cleaned with an alcohol swab before needles are inserted.

Needle Insertion

Very thin, solid filiform needles (much finer than a hypodermic needle) are inserted directly into trigger points or tight muscle bands.

You might feel:

  • A brief pinch or prick on entry
  • A deep aching, cramping, or pressure sensation, this is called the “twitch response” or de qi feeling, and it’s actually a good sign that the right spot was hit
  • Occasional mild twitching of the muscle

During the Session

Needles typically stay in place for 10–30 minutes.

The practitioner may:

  • Leave needles still (passive)
  • Gently manipulate them (rotate or move slightly)
  • Apply electrical stimulation through the needles (e-stim / electroacupuncture)
  • Use heat (infrared lamp nearby)

You’ll generally just rest quietly during this time.

After the Needles Come Out

Removal is quick and usually painless.

Afterward, you may notice:

  • Soreness in the treated area for 24–48 hours (like post-workout soreness)
  • Bruising at insertion sites is minor and normal
  • Immediate relief or loosening of tension in some cases
  • Fatigue or a relaxed, drowsy feeling

Post-Session Guidance

The practitioner will typically advise you to drink plenty of water, avoid intense exercise that day, and apply heat or ice if sore. Multiple sessions are usually recommended for lasting results, often 4–8 sessions, depending on the condition.

We understand needles make many nervous; however, these methods of care are incredibly safe and pain-free. Most patients experience only mild sensations, such as tingling, and many find the process to be calming and soothing.

Each session is designed to be both efficient and effective, leaving patients feeling relieved and restored. You can trust that we’ll ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
